Viewing enclosure
Trailer door opens, European bison out, door closes again. Releasing a herd of European bison is not quite that simple. On the contrary. One principle applies to this project, unique in Western Europe: the European bison is a wild animal and must be treated as such. Following an intensive settling-in
stage, the herd is to roam freely through the Rothaar Mountains. Hikers will meet European bison - if they are very lucky.
The animals are shy and follow their natural instinct to flee. Nevertheless, in order to be able to observe European bison in their natural environment, a viewing enclosure is also being planned outside of the project area. Twelve animals, 35 hectares, one objective: to provide visitors with a unique experience of nature. The enclosure is scheduled for completion later in 2010
when the first animal residents will move in.
