The species protection project

It is a typical question asked of primary school children: What animals live in our forests? Wild boar, deer, European bison and ..., hold on a second ... European bison? In Germany? Yes, in Germany, or Siegen-Wittgenstein to
be more precise. This project aimed at settling European bison, a species of wild animal threatened with extinction, is unique in Western Europe.

Experts began searching at an early stage for a suitable territory in Germany and struck it rich in the Rothaar Mountains, in the south Westphalian district of Siegen-Wittgenstein. Seventy percent of the district is covered in forest,
the highest percentage in the whole of Germany. Scientists were supported in their project by Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, a nature
lover, forest owner and European bison visionary.
